WordPress SEOwithout a rebuild.
Archives, titles, and internal links on the templates you already have. A new theme is a different project.
The short answer
What WordPress SEO fixes.
WordPress SEO is indexation and intent on a site that already publishes. Tag archives, attachment URLs, and thin author pages often outnumber the services you sell. We keep one SEO plugin, point titles at the templates that should rank, and build internal links from articles to those templates. If the theme cannot express the page, that is a web project. This engagement does not install a new theme and call it SEO.
Right fit
The CMS can publish. The index cannot tell what matters.
This fits when WordPress is staying. Editors can ship a location, a service, or an article, and the problem is what Google is allowed to keep. Date archives, tag pages, and media attachments create URLs nobody would send to a customer. Those URLs compete with the pages that actually describe the offer.
It is the wrong engagement when the editor is broken, the templates do not exist, or every page is a one-off drawing. Fixing titles on a site nobody can update will not hold. We will say when the work is a build instead, and we will not pretend a plugin settings screen is a redesign.
- You are keeping WordPress, and someone can still publish.
- Search Console shows indexed URLs you would not put in the navigation.
- Service, location, or article templates already exist, even if the fields are messy.
On the templates
One plugin, then the URLs that should remain.
Two SEO plugins is a common find. Both write a title, both emit a sitemap, and the live tag depends on which one loaded last. We pick one, move the fields, and remove the other. Titles and descriptions are written on the template that ranks, not pasted into a homepage slider.
Archives get a decision. Categories that match the offer can stay. Tags, dates, and attachment pages usually should not be indexed. Authors get an archive only when a real person writes and that archive is useful. Internal links are edited in the body of the articles you already have, toward the service or location URL, not toward a tag.
- A single SEO plugin, with the other one removed.
- Sitemap limited to the templates you mean to keep.
- Redirects for retired URLs stored in one place, not in three plugins.
Mistakes
A plugin preset and a pile of doorway pages.
The failure mode is an SEO plugin set to 'index everything,' plus a monthly post quota that never links to a service. The index grows. The pages a customer would use do not. A settings export from another site is not a strategy, because that site did not have your locations or your offers.
The other failure is city pages spun from one template by swapping the town name, or a link package aimed at the homepage. WordPress makes both easy. Neither belongs in this work. If a location is real, it gets a page with the facts of that location. If it is not, it does not get a URL.
- No second SEO plugin left active 'just in case.'
- No indexed attachment, tag, or date archive by default.
- No city pages for places you do not serve.
What we read
Coverage first, then the queries on the right URLs.
The first read is index coverage: which templates are indexed, and which junk URLs dropped after the archive rules. A rise in total indexed pages is not a win if the new pages are tags. We want the service and location URLs fetched, and the archives gone.
Then we read queries and landing pages in Search Console. A service query should land on the service template, not on a blog post that mentions the service once. Rank tracking is a diagnostic. A query that lands on the wrong URL is an internal-link and title problem, and we treat it that way in the review.
- Indexed URL counts by template type, not one sitewide total.
- Queries mapped to the landing URL you intended.
- Redirects checked when a slug changes, so the old URL does not 404.
Example engagement
A regional professional firm on a tired index.
Regional professional firm, WordPress, one office per city they actually served. The SEO plugin and a leftover second plugin both shipped sitemaps. Attachment pages for every headshot were indexed. Tag archives outranked two practice pages for the terms those pages were written to win.
We did not reskin the theme. We turned off indexing on attachments, tags, and dates, kept one plugin, and rewrote titles on the practice and office templates. Articles that mentioned a practice were edited to link to that practice URL. Coverage shifted toward those templates over the next crawl cycles. The firm's editors kept publishing in the same admin.

Questions
WordPress questions.
Will you replace our theme as part of SEO?
No. If a template cannot hold a title, a heading, and the offer, we will flag a build. This engagement edits index rules, fields, and internal links on the theme you have. A redesign is quoted separately.
Which SEO plugin do you require?
We do not have a required brand. We require one plugin that the site will keep updated, storing titles, descriptions, and sitemap rules. The second plugin goes. Switching tools midstream for taste is how fields get lost.
Should blog categories rank?
Only when a category is a real hub you would show a customer, with an introduction and links to specific pages. A category that is only a list of posts usually should not compete with a service URL.
Do we need a post every week?
No. A post is useful when it answers a question the service page should not carry, and when it links to that service page. A quota that outruns the person who must approve claims is how thin URLs get indexed.
What about page speed?
We will point at a plugin or a script that is clearly in the way. A ground-up performance rebuild is not this project. If the theme itself is the weight, that finding goes to the web engagement instead of being hidden inside SEO.
